What to Eat When in California
Californians love avocado. We put it on everything! Toast, eggs, bagels, salads, burgers . . . check almost any menu at a California restaurant, and you will probably find avocado on something!
California-style sushi is its own style of sushi (surprise: there is avocado in many of the California-style sushi rolls)! California sushi uses herbs such as cilantro and jalapeno and fruits like lime and mango.
This delicious seafood stew was created in San Francisco by Italian immigrants. It’s a beautiful stew that combines many types of seafood from the Pacific Ocean: often cioppino has crab, clams, shrimp, scallops, squid, mussels, and fish. Enjoy this stew with grilled or toasted bread and a slice of lemon. Yum!
Farmers’ market finds
Californians farmers come together and sell their produce at local farmers’ markets. Farmers’ markets are the best ways to learn about the produce that is in season and also learn about the local products such as olive oil, honey, meats, and cheeses. You can also find jewelry, gifts, clothes, and some vendors selling foods. Yum!
Many people are surprised to hear that people put fish in a taco, but it’s delicious! Fish tacos come with grilled or fried fish. The tacos often have cabbage, a white sauce with “secret ingredients” (usually sour cream and spices), lime juice, and hot sauce and salsa. Delicious!
Food trucks are a great way to meet local cooks and try fun and inventive dishes. Food trucks often serve simple and tasty food that can be made quickly, such as tacos, burgers, and burritos. Often, food trucks are a fusion of two types of cuisine; for example, a sushi-style burrito. Since we are in California, expect to see a lot of avocado on the menus!
San Francisco is known for its sourdough bread: have you tried it? You do not have to live in the Bay Area to enjoy this delicious and tangy bread; most bakeries sell this bread warm and straight from the oven.
