Thanksgiving Vocabulary for English Learners

Are you spending Thanksgiving in the United States? Get ready for a delicious and exciting holiday! Before your first Thanksgiving dinner, be sure to learn these Thanksgiving-related terms and vocabulary words.

Thanksgiving Vocabulary for English Learners

Cornucopia

Definition 1: A large amount of something.

Example: There was a cornucopia of pies at the dessert table.

Definition 2: A horn-shaped basket that is filled with fruits, vegetables, and nuts; this has become a symbol of Thanksgiving.

Example: My Mom has decorated our Thanksgiving table with the same cornucopia since I was a child.

Feast

Definition: A large meal.

Example: We had such a feast this year! I am so full!

Gobble up

Definition: To eat something quickly.

Example: You gobbled up the sweet potatoes!

Gratitude

Definition: Thankfulness.

Example: To show gratitude, we bought the Thanksgiving dinner host a bouquet of flowers.

Harvest

Definition 1: The action of gathering foods that are ready to be eaten.

Example: During harvest, there are always many people working in the fields.

Definition 2: The time of year when people gather these foods.

Example: The Thanksgiving holiday comes from the tradition of eating a large meal after the harvest.

Parade

Definition: A large number of people walking or riding in the streets to celebrate a holiday or event.

Example: Are you going to watch the Thanksgiving Day Parade?

(Parade) Floats

Definition: The decorated cars or other moving vehicles that are in a parade. Floats can also be large balloons in the shapes of animals or characters.

Example: One year, we helped to decorate the float that our company used in our city’s Thanksgiving Day parade.

(To feel) stuffed

Definition: The feeling after eating a lot of food.

Example: I can’t eat any more. I am stuffed.

Even if you’re stuffed, there is always room for pie!

Tradition

Definition: A behavior that people have been practicing for a long time.

Example: In my house, it’s tradition to make turkey sandwiches the day after Thanksgiving.

Foods, games, and decorations are all examples of traditions families have.

Wishbone

Definition: The u-shaped bone in the middle of a turkey or chicken breast; families often have a tradition of having two people hold each side of the bone, make a wish, and pull. Tradition says that the wish of the person who gets the larger bone will come true.

Example: Who is going to break the wishbone with me this year?
