Never a dull moment

There is always something to do in the San Francisco Bay Area. Just in the city of San Francisco, there are many different neighborhoods (each with a unique personality) to explore. Check out the hippy neighborhood of Haight and Ashbury, exciting and professional Financial District, vibrant Mission District, and the Victorian houses (pictured below).

If you love the outdoors, the Bay Area has beautiful parks and beaches: our San Francisco Beaches guide will help you decide which beach to visit, and our Guide to Hiking in the Bay Area has the information you need to plan a day in nature. If you prefer to stay indoors, see some of the famous and impressive museums in SF, like the California Academy of Sciences. (Our Guide to SF Museums is full of other ideas!)

Of course, there are always the very “classically American” options for entertainment: football and baseball! SF is home to the San Francisco Giants, the Oakland A’s, and the 49ers. Go see a game!

Day/weekend trips to incredible locations

From San Francisco, residents have many options for beautiful weekend or day trips. Lake Tahoe, which is on the border of California and Nevada, is beautiful all year: in the winter, try snowboarding or skiing; in the summer, try water sports in the blue and green lake. Napa Valley and its award-winning wines and restaurants are a short drive from SF, and so is Silicon Valley, which will inspire you to create an app that might be the next Instagram.

For a relaxing weekend, visit Santa Cruz, which is a seaside town that has an amusement park, giant redwood trees, and a fun hippie culture. Finally, there is the most stunning place in California: Yosemite! This natural park is picture perfect.

Cultural diversity

San Francisco is known for having a mix of cultures, which creates a warm and welcoming environment for people from all backgrounds. This also creates some delicious fusion foods and leads to fun festivals celebrating different cultures and heritages. Don’t miss them!

Healthy lifestyle and great foods

California is known for being a state with healthy residents. It is probably due to a combination of delicious local produce (the state’ farmers grow everything from oranges to avocados to rice) and a culture that focuses on fresh ingredients. You will find healthy options on nearly all restaurant menus, farmers’ markets in most neighborhoods, and gyms and wellness centers to promote a healthy and active lifestyle.
