We are proud to announce the May winner of the IEC@DVC Abe & Nomura Memorial Scholarship: Gefryde Bosawa Bikomba!
IEC@DVC began the scholarship in memory of two IEC students who were tragically killed in an automobile accident. We award a $500 scholarship twice a year to a student who demonstrates high academic excellence and community involvement. Each session teachers and staff nominate top students who participate enthusiastically in their studies as well as outside activities.
Gefryde and her fellow scholarship nominees were required to write a 500-word essay about their experience in the United States and how it has influenced them. They also needed to submit a list of activities they have participated in, whether through IEC or with host family and friends. Teachers and staff then read all of the essays (focusing on content, not grammar!) and voted for their favorites.
It is always very touching for IEC faculty and staff to read about our students’ experiences, and Gefryde’s essay was no exception. She wrote with honesty about her fears and anxiety before coming to the US, and the subsequent relief and happiness she found with her wonderful host mother who welcomed Gefryde as part of her family. Gefryde has been an excellent student at IEC who has continually participated both in and outside of class. We wish her the very best of luck with her future studies!
