Meishan Fan, an IEC and DVC alumni, came to the United States in August 2012 to pursue a college education. She chose DVC after learning that the community college has the highest transfer rates to some of the best universities in California. Since she didn’t speak English at the time of arrival, Meishan enrolled at the International Education Center (IEC) for 8 months where she went from beginner to the most advanced level.
At IEC, Meishan found that the many activities provided allowed her to practice English and make new international friends. She also met her current Japanese boyfriend while taking classes at IEC!
After passing the highest level class at IEC, Advanced B, Meishan started in the Bridge program, a 7 week, 6 unit course load that is tailored especially for international transfer students. She then completed 2 years at DVC and graduated with a 3.91 GPA. This is truly an amazing accomplishment for a girl who came to the US without any English language skills! What is even more impressive is that Meishan applied to 6 University of California schools and was accepted into all of them!
As of now, Meishan is going to UC Berkeley in fall 2015. She chose UC Berkeley since she now has many friends in the area and her boyfriend was also accepted into the school.
At Berkeley, Meishan plans to study Statistics and dreams of becoming an Actuary – someone who analyzes the financial consequences of risk. She loves California and hopes to stay for the rest of her life. Everyone at IEC would like to congratulate Meishan and wish her the very best on her college journey. Thank you for letting us be a part of making your dreams come true!
