I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! Have you heard this expression before? It’s hard not to love ice cream and its many flavors. In fact, at IEC@DVC we love ice cream so much that we often have ice cream sandwich and ice cream float parties! Before trying delicious ice cream in the U.S., learn some ice cream vocabulary in English. Warning: this article will make you hungry!
Ice Cream Vocabulary in English
How many of these ice cream vocabulary words do you know? And which of these ice cream dishes looks the most delicious to you?
Definition: A dry pastry that holds ice cream. Cones are usually called “waffle cones” because of their pattern.
Some cones are dipped in chocolate and then rolled in peanuts. Delicious!
Definition: A spoonful of ice cream. People often order a single scoop or a double scoop of ice cream.
Definition: The small pieces of nuts, fruit, or candy that go on top of the ice cream.
Definition: Colorful pieces of candy that are commonly used in desserts.
Definition: A sundae is any combination of ice cream, syrups and sauces, and toppings. Typically sundaes include chocolate sauce, nuts, whipped cream, and a cherry. Yum!
Hot fudge sundae
Definition: One of the most popular sundaes is a hot fudge sundae. In this dessert, warm fudge (a thick chocolate dessert) is poured over ice cream; then toppings are added.
Definition: A traditional dessert with a banana, three scoops of ice cream (chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla), sauces (chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla), whipped cream, nuts, and whipped cream. The dessert is finished with a cherry. The dessert is usually shared with friends because it it so rich!
Ice cream floats
Definition: Ice cream (usually vanilla) mixed with soda (usually root beer or Pepsi/Coca Cola). The two ingredients make a creamy drink that is eaten with a long spoon.
Ice cream sandwiches
Definition: Ice cream in the middle of two cookies or soft pastries.
Definition: Ice cream, milk, ice, and flavorings or syrup blended together into a cold and thick drink. A milkshake is often topped with whipped cream and a cherry.
Definition: The word “froyo” is a combination of the words “frozen yogurt.” Froyo isn’t technically ice cream, but it is very popular in the U.S.!
